Love Notes

Do you mind if they speak ill of Colombia?

Maybe it's not all that bad and hurts you, frustrates and bothers what you hear on the radio or you see in TV; but the truth is that sometimes our reality is very alien to the borders that you go through your day-to-day life. Closer than you can imagine, a few minutes by car, there are other worlds, spaces of absolute uprooting and poverty. And you will find them under the same sky of the city you inhabit. In the northeastern hills of Bogotá, you will find the neighborhood El Codito. A neighborhood that adjoins the municipality of La Calera and that is part of the town of Usaquén, divided by several areas or annexed neighborhoods such as Nuevo Horizonte, Chaparral, Buena Vista, La Estrellita among others. This is a community mainly of low-stratum and from regions of the country living as displaced persons. The grounds of invasion are the constant in the Codito, very few homes have legal documents and many of them have been built near rocky escarpeds, hence they are threatened constantly because of landslides and instability of the terrain. These sites are not eligible to be Inhabited. However, people continue to arrive from all over the country, who perhaps should not be here but in the fields, from where they were uprooted.

From a social perspective, the Codito has maintained very individuals; insecurity, vandalism, drug addiction, mismanagement of public spaces, public health and education. Yes, it's frustrating but real; so are people who have joined around change this reality. Love and Future, words that were born 20 years ago in this vulnerable area of our capital and that day by day, year after year, it reaps fruit. Betting on changing children's lives is priceless. And today, more than 400 children have been part of this adventure that we take to eliminate the unspeakable condition of poverty, malnutrition and other critical factors that afflict our children and young people. The School of Music, opportunities for better education (Technical and/or professional), monitoring and permanent work with families, good nutrition and of course Love, are the fundamental axis for changing history. Be a part of us and get rid of those who speak ill of Colombia, encourage yourself to toast Love and Future for our children. And let indifference not rule you!

Heralds of good news...

Depending on where you live and grow, a few streets away, few houses, few steps, there are similar realities. It's no exception here. Boys grow up with the same footballs, girls grow up among the same dolls and many of them hopefully become teenagers. But here in El Codito, men and women grow up who couldn't be as young as they ever imagined they could have been. In this world children become men very early, if being a man is not studying and carrying a gun to be the baddest. And if being a woman is having children at a very young age and working on whatever comes out to bring food into the house, there are plenty here. Becoming a public order problem, it is the destination of thousands of young people without opportunities, they are teenagers without a future. Knowing where a teenager makes the decision to live in the same way as he was taught, it is not a difficult conundrum to decipher, just walk the steps of a child who had his wings cut off, who was pushed into fear, to feed with pain. The university, an unimaginable destination for the vast majority of young people in the area, appears as a way after living among a Love Incubator. Yes, Cristian studies Music (piano and composition), José studies Statistics, Jessica invests her time between Marketing and International Business, Viviana close to being a Degree in Children's Education and Tatiana our lawyer, are some of the ambassadors of El Codito scattered in the classroom, seeing her dreams crystallize. With a help from the foundation and a big push from godparents and friends, we've taken teenagers from the streets to colleges. Many of them proudly declare that they are the only members of their family and descendants, who set foot in a college classroom. They are worthy representatives of the Republic of the Northeastern Lomas of Bogota. Behind them are many others in private schools, all thanks to people committed to changing history. We hope that these, which are the vivid example of the potential of our young people and that there is always hope to grow, will not be trunsed against the stories of their childhood companions; and be heralds of good news for this vulnerable but dream-filled population that today they osstely shout: We are Adolescents with the Future!
